Rev Anthony Hayworth - Pastor |
Rev Anthony Hayworth Pastor Tony was born and raised in Winston-Salem, NC and graduated from North Carolina State University with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1984. He spent twenty years making chemicals in Greensboro and High Point as a Plant Manager, Engineering Manager, and Sales engineer. He grew up at Friedland Moravian Church where he met his wife Laura Barnes. They married in 1987 and their daughter, Elizabeth, was born in 1989. Elizabeth just graduated from Salem Academy and will be attending Randolph College in Lynchburg, Virginia in the fall. Laura has been the Music Director at Good Shepherd Moravian and the Choir Director at Oak Grove Moravian Church. Tony's mom still lives near Winston-Salem, and he has one brother (married with two daughters and one grandson as of June 13). Laura has one brother and two sisters who all live in the Winston-Salem area. They have two cats and three dogs. In June 2005, Tony and his daughter Elizabeth attended a mission camp in the mountains of NC. This experience became a turning point in Tony's life. For quite some time, he had been very unhappy with his situation at work. That summer after mission camp, He told God he would give him the rest of his life if he would get him out of his work situation. On August 16th, he got his answer when his position was eliminated as part of a large reduction in force. Ten days later he arrived at Moravian Theological Seminary. He lived in Bethlehem for two years and returned to Winston-Salem for my third year of seminary. While in Winston-Salem, he attended Wake Forest University Divinity School and took classes from Moravian via a computer webcam. He graduated from Moravian Theological Seminary on May 10, 2008. Tony has been involved with a variety of activities in congregational life. At Friedland, he was involved in Sunday School and Youth Fellowship. He was active in Boy Scouts and became an Eagle Scout. At Good Shepherd, he was very active, serving as Head Usher, soprano trumpet in the band, Sunday school teacher, Vice-Chair of the Board, and a member of the Fellowship Committee, Buildings and Grounds committee, Stewardship committee and Evangelism committee. He also had the honor of representing Good Shepherd at Synod. An important part of his spiritual journey was the completion of Gemeinschaft I and II and the Christian Believer series. During seminary, he was blest to serve two congregations as a student pastor: three semesters at Lancaster Moravian (Lancaster PA) and two semesters at Fries Memorial Moravian Church. His interest for ministry are varied and mirror his experience in these two congregations; among his passions are worship, pastoral care, evangelism and spiritual formation. Tony's hobbies and free time have changed dramatically since he entered seminary. Before seminary, he liked to build big things and was working on getting his Contractors License to build houses. He also enjoyed playing golf and working in the yard. Other interests were martial arts, bike riding, and working out at the gym. Currently, he is trying to learn to play the guitar, baritone horn, and sing tenor. It is likely that only golf and exercise will find time in his schedule as he concentrates on the tasks of ministry. From Pastor Tony: "It is my privilege and honor to be called to serve Grace Moravian Church and to live out a life devoted to Jesus Christ, our compassionate and loving Lord and Savior. Laura, Elizabeth, and I are looking forward to living in the parsonage and being active members of a loving and welcoming Christian community." |

Scarlett Dowdy - Children and Youth Ministry |
Scarlett Dowdy - Children and Youth Ministry Scarlett grew up in Mt. Airy, attending Mt. Airy High School and graduated in 1983. After that, she attended Surry Community College where she earned a degree in General Office Technology. She married Bob Dowdy, and four years later they had a daughter. For ten years, Scarlett worked as the office manager of her family's glass business. During this time the three Dowdys joined Grace, where Scarlett felt very needed. She volunteered for everything she could. When her daughter attended summer camp at Laurel Ridge, Scarlett decided to go as a counselor. They both had a wonderful experience, although Scarlett began to feel a sense of calling. It wasn't until the next year, when she returned to camp, that the call became clear. Listening to God's call, Scarlett left her family business to do God's work as the Director of Children and Youth Ministry at Grace. She began work in October 2001, and knows this is what God wants her to do. She gets great pleasure in taking the youth on mission trips, knowing that they may have life-changing experiences. Scarlett spends part of each summer at Laurel Ridge as a counselor or dean. Enjoying all ages from pre-school to high school, she loves what she does. I am truly blessed to be able to work with the young people of this church.'
